indian sadhus and holy men

intro

I have been photographing sadhus in India for many years,
and to me they are a fascinating group of people.
Traditionally when a man has raised his family
he may choose to spend the rest of his days
in search of enlightenment,
giving up all material possessions,
and taking to the road with a begging bowl.

Society as a whole supports this way of life.
They can travel for free, and plenty of people
give food or money, for their own good karma.

India has produced many enlightened masters and mystics
though the ages, right up to present times.
Intense self examination will be provoked in anyone
who is lucky enough to spend time with them.
This is India's greatest gift to the world.
